Greg is the brains and face behind Wicked Fishing, a series of how to videos on fishing for serious offshore reef fish and more. He’s a prominant writer and speaker on fishing and has the runs well and truly on the board.
The venue for the trip was the offshore waters of Double Island Point, leaving from Tin Can Bay and the idea behind the trip was to test out the Venom rods (RLFV16, RLFV19, RLFVS12 and the RLFVCRS3). The two spin rods were tested just to see their limits and to have a bit of fun with some deep fished plastics.
The day was almost mirror clam and with Greg’s boat eating up the miles, his Furuno gear was set up to indicate new ground – something Greg loves checking out.
A slight little rise Greg noticed at speed had the boat being swung around and a closer look being had, and the small 2-4m rise was littered with fish signals. And that’s when the mayhem began!
With four on board (Greg, his Dad, Troy and Clint) the action was fast and furious with reds over 10kg coming over the side with regularity. It was an epic session that saw Troy and Greg, after catching fish on the heavy overhead Venoms, lightening up and seeing what they could do with the spin rods and some plastics.
As with all good stories, this approach also worked and a milestone day was had by all.
Clint, who had previously never taken a legal red emperor, nailed his PB good and proper with a swag of fish over 10kg. Dicko said he’d never seen so many really big reds at one time. Greg was just ecstatic the boys had such a memorable day.
The pics tell the story – check them out!
