Over the course of the competition 5,669 flathead were measured in and of these 2,938 were over the 40cm legal limit. The winners, Lowrance Whyte Boyz, fished deep and crushed the competition on Day 1 using a mix of larger soft plastics and the ever reliable Zerek Fish Trap. It was one of the most stunning days in the history of the Classic and the team never looked back.
We had four teams entered this year and they included:
Team Wilson consisting of Kord Luckus, Rob Payne and Scott Fleming;
Zerek consisting of Troy Dixon, Adam Meredith and Sean Conlon
Wilson Women consisting of Jennifer Wilson, Kat Lam and Lee Neighsmith
Wilson Juniors consisting of Cade Luckus and Mitch Reed
The results for our team were great overall with Zerek coming in 5th overall, Team Wilson coming in 6th overall, Wilson Juniors coming in 2nd in the Junior Section and Wilson Women coming in 3rd in the Women’s Team Category. The stand out individual competitor for Wilson Fishing was Troy Dixon who finished in 9th position individually – a very impressive Top 10 finish in a 670 angler field.
But what was the most reliable way our teams caught fish?
We spoke to Troy about his tactics and discovered that the Zerek Tango Shad 50mm was his main lure. Troy fish the recently released So Much colour, a primarily black lure with ultraviolet pink stripes and splashes. This lure was trolled in shallow water, no deeper than 5 feet and occasionally as shallow as 2 feet and the flathead climbed all over it.
It was a brave choice by Troy as this was a prototype lure colour, but a choice that inevitably paid off brilliantly. As Troy said “I put this lure on early on Day 1 and didn’t take it off for the rest of the competition”. That’s a fair endorsement for a lure model and colour, especially when you consider Troy has access to every lure in the Zerek range.
Overall, the Gold Coast Flathead Classic was a resounding success for Wilson Fishing. Two Top 10 teams overall, top threes in the Junior’s and Women’s categories and most of the top teams using our lures for part of the competition. You can’t really ask for better than that from any tournament, especially one as big and strong as the Gold Coast Flathead Classic.
